Safety & Security: Locks & Locksmiths
Insurance - ensure your locks match your insurance conditions
The majority of Australian householders may have no idea of the precise type of locks fitted to any of their doors, but believe that existing locks meet safety standards, despite the warnings of insurance commentators.
I've lost the keys to my car; do I have to go back to the manufacturer?
Car keys are becoming more sophisticated as they and the systems they include not only start your car but unlock the doors, set the alarm and other tasks depending on your car. Losing the keys means you have to replace a sophisticated system.
I've lost my keys to my house; do I have to get new locks fitted?
Losing your house keys is extremely frustrating. The likelihood of you - or a potential burglar - finding them has to be weighed against your home's security. When do you call a locksmith to change your locks and when do you risk it? It depends:
New home? New locks!
Moving into a new (but pre-loved) home is a wonderful experience: you've saved your dollars, done your research, and then made a huge commitment to your future and your lifestyle. Many times the details of changing the locks are overlooked, but it's essential.
What other services might a locksmith commonly provide?
Most people think of locksmiths as being handy when you lose a key and can't get into your home. But locks are just one of the things a modern locksmith can do.
Why should I use a licensed locksmith when I might be able to get a handyman cheaper?
In the same way that you would prefer a doctor to diagnose and treat your illness, rather then a nurse; or a barrister to represent you in court, as opposed to a legal secretary, when you are looking for someone to repair your lock or door latch you contact a locksmith rather than a handyman.
Can I have all my locks work with just one key?
When it comes to locks, "keyed alike" and "keyed to differ" are basic terms used by a locksmith. Keyed to differ means each lock has its own key - you cannot use the key for one lock to open another. Keyed alike means the locks are set to the same key - one key and will open all locks.
Choosing the right lock for the job
Good locksmiths provide valuable advice for choosing the right locks for your home and install them to maximize their effectiveness, the two most common being cylinder and horizontal deadlocks.
Types of door locks for the home
Choosing the right types of locks for your external doors (i.e. front, back and side doors) can seem a bit of an effort, given the confusing array available. Before choosing a door lock, it's important to familiarise yourself with the different products, and the pros and cons of each.
