When to DIY and when not – the benefits of going to a professional

Owning and running a car is indispensable for many Australians. The family car is often the primary mode of transport for work and family commitments and is particularly important for people who live in remote or regional areas. Running a car can be costly when you add up the cost of petrol, repairs and servicing. But should you perform repairs yourself or pay for the services of a motor mechanic?

Do it yourself?

It’s always a good idea to get to know your car and to recognise when you have a potential problem. Some motor repairs can be easily learnt: for example changing oil, water and coolant, replacing tyres and installing new windscreen wiper blades. There is a vast array of information and ‘how to’ instructions for DIY car repairs on the Internet. A lot will depend on your own confidence and knowledge in diagnosing the problem and whether or not you have the tools and expertise to be able to fix the problem. If you don’t, it is advisable to call in a mechanic for vehicle repairs.

Call in a professional?

For some repairs, it is always best to engage a professional auto mechanic for their advice and expertise. The more expensive the car (or the replacement part), or for the safety of yourself and your passengers, the greater is the need to seek professional advice. Mobile mechanics are another option for motor repairs as your car can remain on your premises, or if you are broken down on the side of the road, they will bring the repairs to you. Some trusted car mechanics will even give an over-the-phone diagnosis of the problem, or provide tips on which parts of a car service or repair you can DIY safely.
