Tips on detecting when your tyres are due for replacement

Replacing tyres at the right time is important for the optimal performance of your car, and also for your ability to drive safely and comfortably. Replacing tyres is not something you think about everyday, so how do you know when your tyres need to be replaced?

Service your car regularly

Your auto mechanic will certainly advise on the need for a tyre replacement at the time of your regular car service. A mechanic will also pay attention to the car’s wheel alignment at this time; wear and tear on tyres is greatly reduced when wheels are kept properly aligned.

Pay attention to your car

Often, the first indication that your tyres need replacing is a deterioration in the car’s performance, for example, the car doesn’t handle as well or grip the road in wet weather, or doesn’t respond quickly when braking. Once a tyre’s tread wears down to 1.6mm (the minimum legal limit) it may be dangerous. A mechanic or tyre specialist will test this level, but taking a once-weekly walk around your car yourself will help familiarise you with how your tyres should look. Check for any bulges or irregular wear to each tyre which may indicate potential mechanical problems. Inflation levels will also impact your tyres’ lifespan, so take a moment to check tyre pressure at the service station as you fill up with petrol.

Driving with bald tyres is dangerous and may bring your vehicle to the attention of the police. Contact your motor mechanic or tyre specialist if you have any concerns about your tyres.
