Swimmers often mistakenly blame red eyes, itchy skin and a strong chemical smell of swimming pool water on ‘too much chlorine’. However, chemicals called chloramines are the real culprit for swimming pool side effects and they are formed in the water when chlorine is too low (more on that later). Of course, all you need to do is take a shower afterwards and makes sure that if you have sensitive skin you apply a moisturiser after swimming. But there is a solution, one that reduces these side effects if you are considering putting in an in ground pool, an indoor pool or just a good, old above ground family splash pit. And it’s a salty solution.
