Find information regarding agistments under this Yellow™ heading. Agistment is essentially the sale of a person’s land to be made available to pasture. In exchange for a pre-determined fee, the individual will, in turn, allow cattle, horses or other livestock to feed on their land. In most cases, the person owning the land would be partially responsible for the livestock’s well being, in exchange for the fee provided. Transportation costs and services are usually provided by the land owner.

An agistment contract, ideally, would be offered for a particular time frame (such as an entire season) or until the pasture has been exhausted. Payment varies from charging a fee per cow, sheep, etc.; as a flat fee for the entire piece of land until resources are no longer plentiful; or as a lease agreement per month, year, etc. An agistment is beneficial to the livestock owner who will save the expense of feed. The benefit to the landowner or individual is that their pasture will be better controlled in terms of overgrowth, maintenance, etc. along with the remuneration.

Agistments, in plentiful years (i.e. years with heavy rain and, consequently, growth) may not demand as high a return in profit, as those would in non-plentiful (i.e. drought) years. As a result, cattle agistments may be used as a supplementary source of income (to the land owner), and feed (to the livestock owner). This is beneficial to involved parties, allowing them to make the best use of resources available to them.
