A general agent buys or sells a specific product or service for an individual or organisation. Generally, this person will work for a fee; such as a percentage of sale, hourly rate, flat rate, etc.

A general agent can provide valuable service to the client, by offering him relevant products and services. In the insurance industry, a general insurance agent will sell insurance to the public, either from a contracted third party, or through the company that the agent is employed with. Additionally, the agent may be given exclusivity over a specified region. In some cases, this can include supervising and overseeing other insurance agents as well. If the agent makes use of a third party, they will typically be paid a commission of the sale based on specified parameters. Insurance brokers can be self- employed and work for multiple companies, thus offering a variety of products.

Other general agents offer specific products or services and work in a similar fashion. They can offer services such as selling an individual’s or organisation’s services, such as a sporting agent, modelling agent, legal agent, etc. The agent is hired by the individual or organisation seeking the services provided and paid according to the stated contract.
