This Yellow™ heading has information on air curtains. Air curtains are used by stores and buildings whose front doors remain open constantly and result in loss of heat or air conditioning. The air curtain is powered by a fan that forces air from the top of the door to the bottom, thus creating an invisible “curtain” that prevents heat or air conditioning from exiting. The primary function of the air curtain is to keep temperatures steady within the establishment, without the heating or air conditioning system having to run continuously.
Air curtains are used as energy retaining tools to prevent heating or air conditioning from leaving a building. The air curtain may run continuously if set to do so; but is used generally when a door is left open. The most effective use of the air curtain is to have it connected to a switch that turns the unit on when the door is open, and consequently turns it back off when it is closed. This method keeps the temperature steady using the least amount of effort and power.
As an added benefit, the air curtain can also act as a type of “bug shield.” The curtain must provide enough energy so that the forced air reaches the bottom of the door, when hung from the top. Consequently, the forced air that is generated creates a barrier that, in most cases, bugs cannot penetrate. As a result, the added benefit of the air curtain keeps pests out, while simultaneously keeping the heat or air conditioning in.
