For information regarding air cushion vehicles and equipment, look under this Yellow™ heading. An air cushion vehicle is a man-made vehicle that ejects air into a “skirt” on the under body of the vehicle. This allows the vehicle to ride above the surface on a small cushion of air. Air cushion vehicles are most commonly associated with the ones that propel themselves over water. Most air cushion vehicles however, can steer themselves only over relatively smooth surfaces.
Air cushion vehicles, also known as hovercrafts or Ground Effect Machines, are given the ability to float above the surface. They are typically propelled forward or in reverse by fans that push the craft across the invisible cushion of air. The hovering vehicle can expel more energy than most other water vehicles, with minimal amounts of energy used.
Another common use of air cushion equipment is in trains. This enables the train to move at speeds greater than those of the standard track trains. Additionally, the train uses little energy, as it is powered by the fans. A downside to this technology, when referring to aquatic vehicles, is that it cannot be used in even mildly violent waters. The vehicles are not designed to clear waves, and thus can only be used if the water is completely calm.
