For listings of airports and airport services look under this Yellow™ heading. An airport is a piece of land (generally very large) that is designed to accommodate the facilitation of aircraft takeoff, landing, re-fuelling, etc. In most cases, airports offer services as well, so that the customers enjoy the time spent waiting for their flight. Services could include dining options (both budget and gourmet), entertainment, etc. Other services could include travel agents, retail outlets, Internet kiosks, Wireless Internet access (WiFi), lockers for long term storage, televisions, outside transportation, etc. In some cases, services are provided for an extra fee, while some are provided at the expense of the airport.
Airports have several day-to-day functions that are not accessible to the public. Some of these can include the housing of aircraft for storage, maintenance, etc. This requires the use of large areas of land, which the airport must have at their disposal. Airports are typically based on areas of land that span over several acres, to allow for sufficient room to accommodate all of the services that the airport provides.
Airport services are generally leased out to businesses that wish to offer their individual services to the passengers of that given airport. This benefits the airport by creating another source of income by charging a lease fee, as well as accommodating their passengers. The businesses profit with a steady flow of prospective customers. In other cases, the airport may actually own some of the businesses housed inside of the building as well and employ individuals to provide the services to passengers.
