For information on the Alexander Technique look under this Yellow™ heading. The Alexander Technique is designed to assist individuals in stopping unhealthy and harmful habits that they may have acquired. Using this technique, a student will learn to change tension habits that have been built up over the course of a lifetime. In some cases, this can take several sessions and perhaps a follow-up as well. It can be taught one-on-one or to a group.
Frederick Matthias Alexander was an Australian actor and teacher who originally developed the Alexander technique as a method of vocal training. His vocal training involved what he termed as ‘respiratory re-education.’ He discovered that breathing and vocalisation are part and parcel of how the body functions as a whole and he soon evolved a method of learning how to change maladaptive habits of coordination.
The Alexander technique believes that habits whether physical or mental are all psycho-physical in nature. The technique deals with the psycho-physical coordination of the ‘whole person’ or the entire ‘use of the self.
