Find information on ambulances under this heading. An ambulance is an emergency vehicle used to transport sick or injured patients to a hospital or a place where they can receive proper medical care and attention. Ambulances are typically fitted with certain medical equipment, where a licensed professional is able to administer certain treatments en route to their destination. This allows the ambulance to assist doctors by either pre-determining potential treatment and / or assisting with pre-treatment.
The ambulance was first developed during the civil war, where ambulance wagons would transport injured soldiers off the battle field to a location that they were able to receive the proper treatment. Most ambulances consist of a driver, as well as one or more licensed professionals that are able to assist with medical treatment. Each receives thorough training in their specific field so that they are able to deal with any situation that arises.
Ambulances are given certain freedom from normal traffic violations, such as stop lights, stop signs, one-way roads, etc. Most ambulances are given warning lights and sirens to notify oncoming drivers that they should provide the courtesy to pull over or let the ambulance pass.
