Information on barges can be found under this Yellow™ heading. A barge is a type of boat that is pushed through water, and is typically used to haul large or heavy amounts of material. Barges can also be used to move people across bodies of water, such as lakes or rivers. Typically made of strong metal; barges are generally very heavy in weight.
Barges are often used for the transportation of coal. Given that coal is normally transported in bulk, distributors use barges to send their consignments to their intended destinations. Barges are pushed by another type of boat, as they do not have their own propelling devices.
Barge operators are individuals that drive and steer the barge. Typically, barge operators can expect a schedule that requires them to be out on the water several months out of the year (i.e. work a month, have two weeks off). Barges are a popular mode of transportation, as they use waterways that typically have less traffic than roadways. This, consequently, provides for better and more effective results.
