Batteries--Automotive

About the heading Batteries--Automotive in Yellow™

Information on automotive batteries can be found under this Yellow™ heading. A vehicle battery is a device that assists with powering certain electrical components in a vehicle. The battery itself is about 12 volts.  The battery starts the vehicle and assists with the electrical components during driving.

A battery works by producing electrons. The battery has two posts – a positive and a negative. Negative electrons build up on the negative post and produce electricity when connected to a load (i.e. the car’s headlights, etc.). The battery can be stored for a long time if no connection is made between the positive and negative terminals, as no chemical reaction occurs.

A vehicle battery is assisted during driving by another car part called an alternator. The alternator works as a generator of sorts, in that it produces a continuous stream of electricity for the car to continue to run on. Absence of the alternator would drain the car’s battery very quickly, thus not producing any power for the vehicle to drive.
