A chime is a similar metal device, although it is typically struck from the outside. Bells are used for the purpose of notification while chimes are generally used for decorative purposes. Bells have many uses. The most common one is to have a door bell in the house. A door bell is a device, most likely electric that emits a sound when pressed. This in turn notifies the resident that someone is outside the door. While the ancient system involved physically pulling on a chain to ring the bell, today’s door bells are typically wireless or hardwired into the property. One common use of chimes is a device called a wind chime. This is a metal or wooden device in the form of a cylinder (or cylinders of different sizes), that strike off one another when the wind blows, emitting a variation of sounds. Wind chimes are generally used for decorative purposes.
