Listings of blacksmiths can be found under this Yellow™ heading. A blacksmith is an individual who specialises in the forging of different materials from iron. Blacksmiths can make several types of items, such as horseshoes, pots, pans, etc. The process is generally completed by heating the iron to extremely high temperatures, and shaping, or forging, it into the desired product. Blacksmiths were extremely popular in the 1800s and early 1900s. Additionally, horse travel was the most common and most reliable method of transportation at the time, thus opening up the opportunity for the blacksmith to be the provider of horseshoes. Even today, horseshoes are still used, and still made by blacksmiths. Blacksmiths were an essential part of early society. Machinery was not available at the time to create huge amounts of high quality pots, pans, horseshoes, guns, bullets, etc. All of these items were then the responsibility of the blacksmith to make each day, by hand.
