Cables--Mechanical

About the Cable-Mechanical heading in Yellow™

A mechanical cable is a cable used for purposes that require the use of a high-strength cable. Mechanical cables are generally made with very strong materials, such as metal. The metal consists of tiny strands that are twisted into a larger one-piece cable. This produces an extremely strong and durable material, which can be used for industrial purposes, such as to support an elevator in an elevator shaft.

Mechanical cables can be used for a variety of purposes industrially. Cable cars are transportation vehicles that travel across canyons, gorges, or other chasms; and are supported by a series of mechanical cables. The car travels, suspended along the cable, through the air; and is propelled by a pulley system. Elevators also rely on the use of cables. An elevator is connected to a cable or a series of cables and is pulled up and down throughout the elevator shaft. Suspension bridges are yet another use of mechanical cables. The bridge is suspended by pillars, typically towards the middle or ends of the bridge. The pillars have cables attached, which essentially hold the bridge’s weight up and allows for safe passage across.

Some cables that are used to support smaller amounts of weight are made of a rope-like material as well. Cables are also used for conducting electricity due the natural conductivity that a metal cable provides.
