You will find information on calendars under this Yellow™ heading. A calendar is defined as a system used for dividing large periods of time. Calendars date back several thousand years and were used to divide the year into smaller sections. More commonly today, we associate a calendar with a chart of individual years, months, and days. Apart from telling us what day and date of what month is it today a calendar also enlists the major festivals, holidays and occasions. Calendar may also contain datebooks or planners wherein one can plan ahead for the coming months.
Calendars break down specific portions of a year into smaller timeframes. This in turn allows you to keep track of certain events, such as birthdays, historical events, holidays, etc. The present calendar used internationally is called the Gregorian calendar and divides the year into twelve months. It’s a solar calendar and the year starts on the 1st January. Various countries around the world may use their own calendar for domestic purposes or festivals but the Gregorian calendar is the one used internationally.
A calendar usually consists of 365 days (apart from leap years which have one extra day added in February, i.e. 366). The division of the calendar also helps us to know and plan about the upcoming seasons. Calendar days are now tracked from midnight-to-midnight, within a specific time zone. They were once, however, tracked on a noon-to-noon basis by astronomers. Calendars are broken down into months (consisting of 28-31 days) and days (consisting of 24 hour periods of time).
