Information on canvas and other synthetic product fabrics can be found under this Yellow™ heading. Canvas is a material that is made from very closely woven threads of cotton, linen, jute or hemp. Canvas is most commonly used for paintings. Paint is applied to canvas due to its heavy-duty texture and ability to absorb well. It is also used for making sails, tents, marquees, backpacks, and other functions where sturdiness is required. Canvas was once made primarily from hemp but now more commonly found in cotton. It differs from other heavy cotton fabrics, such as denim, in being plain weave rather than twill weave.
Canvas is an extremely sturdy and long lasting fabric. Tents are made of canvas as it is also largely weather proof. Such canvases have a waterproof coating on top of the fabric, which adds to the durability. Book bags and some shoe styles are also made from canvas. This is due to the material’s durability and strength. Canvas comes in two basic types: plain and duck. The threads in duck canvas are more tightly woven. Canvas is also used for sailing purposes. As sail boats are propelled by wind, the wind essentially pushes the canvas sail, which subsequently pushes the boat through the water.
These days it has become popular to use the myriad of stretched canvas's sizes and shapes for unconventional creative expression. Artists create miniature works on business card sized stretched canvas and use them as trading cards to make connections with other artists. Many artists use canvas for altered art pieces as well as for scrapbook pages-because stretched canvas is available in many sizes, from miniatures to wall size, it is used for decoupage and needlework projects, made into lamps, or painted simply for home decor.
