About the Carbon Black heading in Yellow™

For listings of suppliers of carbon black, look under this Yellow™ heading. Carbon black is produced by the incomplete combustion of heavy petroleum products such as FCC tar, coal tar, ethylene cracking tar, and a small amount from vegetable oil. This material - carbon black has a high surface area to volume ratio, and is one of the first nano-materials to be commonly used. Carbon black is largely used as a pigment and reinforcement in the rubber and plastic industry. Search with Yellow™ for more information on carbon black.

The most common use of carbon black is in automobile tyres. Carbon black is used to conduct heat away from the tread and belt area of the tire, thus reducing thermal damage and increasing the tire’s life. Carbon black particles are also employed in some radar absorbent materials and in printer toners. Carbon black made from vegetable origin is used as a food colouring (commonly known as additive E153). Carbon black is widely used for plastic applications such as films, moldings, pipes and cables. It also provides UV protection for a number of coating applications by marine and aerospace industries. Modern high-tech plants manufacture and market a wide range of carbon black and are all certified to International Quality and Environmental standards. Carbon black is also exported to New Zealand and countries in South-East Asia.

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) states however, that carbon black is possible carcinogenic and short-term exposure to high concentrations of carbon black dust may produce discomfort to the upper respiratory tract, through mechanical irritation. Therefore production and manufacture of the same is controlled by strict guidelines that all suppliers have to adhere to.
