Deer Farmers

About the Deer Farmers heading in Yellow™

For information regarding deer farmers look under this Yellow™ heading. Deer farmers raise one or more species of deer. They grow them for the harvest and export of venison, which is the meat of the deer, and velvet, which refers to the horns. They regularly meet with fellow farmers to discuss their issues and experiences in the industry and share information on practices they are doing in their farm that help in herd growing.

Raising deer yields products that can be sold locally and abroad. Venison or deer meat is low and cholesterol and mainly exported to Europe. Velvet, meanwhile, refers to the horns which are used to cure diseases such as arthritis and osteoporosis and are exported to Asia. Other parts of the deer such as the tail, tendons, and its blood are also used in Asia to make traditional Eastern Medicine. Just like other animals, deer hide make good leather and is used to manufacture leather products.

Deer farmers may raise them together with cattle in common areas. However, deers have a chance of getting illnesses from cattle such as lungworm or catarrhal fever. They also compete for the same food. Deer farmers also give their herd copper bullets which adds to their nutrition especially when pregnant or lactating. Copper helps in the deer’s coat condition, and reproductive abilitiy. But farmers should take care not to overdose them as this will poison the deer. Outside demand for deer products, especially venison, over the past years has left the farmers with the dilemma giving up their breeding females for slaughter. Farmers’ associations help solve this decline in the industry.
