Fishermen who work on boats will generally focus on harvesting a specific type of fish.  Crab fisherman, for example, will use nets and crab traps to fish for bulk amounts of crab.  Other types of fish that might be harvested from a boat could be certain types of shark, etc.  Generally, if a fisherman is looking to catch a significant amount of fish, it’s hard to do so from land, as ‘schools’ of fish will not travel that close to the edge of the water.

Certain types of tools are used when fishing for different kinds of fish.  When fishing as a sport, you would commonly use a fishing pole.  A fishing pole is a long pole-like device, which contains a reel with fishing line on one end.  The fisherman will ‘cast’ the line out, which will contain a sinker and baited hook, and quite simply will wait for the fish to find the bait.  Other types of poles are also available, such as a ‘fly fishing’ pole, which uses a different method.  Further, nets are common on fishing boats, as they allow for greater quantities of a catch when fishing.
