Information on Glass etching can be found under this Yellow™ heading. Glass etching is a form of art that involves inscribing certain letter, designs, and / or pictures onto a piece of glass. Given the delicate nature of the glass, the process itself requires much practise if doing by hand. Glass etching is popular on display items, such as collector’s glasses, picture frames, etc. Glass etching can be completed in a number of ways, the most common of which is by hand by using precision tools. In most cases, the edges of these tools are made from very hard substances, such as diamond tipped edges or metal edges. This allows the inscription to be carved into the glass without breaking or cracking it.
Newer innovations in technology have allowed for better and more precise methods of glass etching. One such method is laser etching, which involves use of a pinpoint laser that cuts directly into the glass. Combined with the use of computer technology, this method allows for extremely intricate details, of which would be very difficult to complete by hand. Laser technology also allows for very detailed pictures to be inscribed as well, such as a picture of a human face adorned upon a drinking glass or other item.
Glass etching, or glass engraving is most popular for items that are used for collections, display, etc. Etching is also popular, however, on standard household items, such as a storm door. Storm doors are now available with the ability to have certain designs, or even your name or house number etched into the glass.
