Hardware manufacturers work their business in a several step fashion.  Of course they must purchase the raw materials from another company or supplier, which could consist of raw metal, etc.  After the hardware is forged or made, then it must be packaged appropriately.  Upon packaging, the item is then sent to a shipment department.  Manufacturers will generally either sell to a wholesaler directly, or to a retailer.  The wholesaler or retailer will then turn around and sell the product to the public while obtaining their own product.
