Knights were among the most popular individuals that wore heraldry, although the practise was also very popular among other individuals around the same time.  Knights would generally wear their coat of arms on their shield or other similar device, but it was also commonly found on other parts of their armour as well.  The symbols would be developed based upon specifics in the individual’s life, such as family members, accomplishments, and so forth.  Further, they might also be passed down from generation to generation in some form or another.
