Pewterware

About the Pewterware heading in Yellow™

Look under this Yellow™ heading for information on pewterware. Pewter is a metal alloy crafted into tableware or decorative pieces. It is composed of tin, copper, and lead. Modern pewterware are now being produced without the lead which used to darken the item over time. As a result, pewter items are now lighter in colour and easier to clean. Pewter shops, nowadays, appeal to those who want to decorate their houses with a look that is classy, clean, and ‘old’. Pewter statuettes and figurines are also a popular gift item in shops today.

Pewterware is an alternative to other home decorative material such as porcelain and glass. It is quite popular in Southeast Asia but is not manufactured in other countries. Pewter objects seem to take on designs that show the culture or distinctions of the country where it is manufactured. In Asian countries, some of the decorative pieces such as vases and figurines are given a design that uses symbols that represent Chinese values, for example. They may also be designed into the figures of animals found in that country. In Australia, pewter figurines and paper weights are usually designed as a koala, a kangaroo, a platypus, or a wombat.

Pewter figurines are made by being cast from hot metal using moulds in a casting machine. The moulds are rubber and are created by laying out the pattern on a rubber sheet and then covering it with another rubber sheet. This rubber mould has to be applied with talcum powder to prevent the two pieces of rubber from sticking together. This is then covered with an aluminium disc before it is placed inside a vulcaniser. After two hours of heating, the mould is taken out and removed from the item formed.
