FAQs

  • What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is an internationally accredited test for students who need to demonstrate English language proficiency. In Australia, it is recognised by education institutions, employers, professional organisations and by government agencies such as Centrelink.

  • What types of IELTS tests are available?

There are two types of tests: Academic and General Purpose. Both tests are made up of four parts: listening speaking reading writing.

  • When will I sit my test?

Confirmation of your test date will be given to you at the time of application. To ensure you receive your preferred date, we recommend that you book well in advance. Visit the Test Dates section of our website for available dates.

  • Can I change from Academic to General Training or from General Training to Academic?

You can change your module, as long as you do so more than five weeks before the test date. There will be an administrative fee of AUD$20. You need to take your original passport and receipt to the IELTS Test Administration Centre.

  • Can I cancel my test?

Yes, you can, but you need to go to the reception office where you booked your test, take with you a valid passport and your original receipt, and complete the Request for Refund or Test Date Transfer Form (PDF, 64Kb)(opens in new window) . If you cancel five weeks or more prior to the test, you will receive a refund, less a cancellation fee of AUD $82.50. If you cancel within the five week period, you will not receive a refund.

  • What do I need to bring to the test?

You are only allowed to take your passport, pencils, erasers and pencil sharpener into the test room. However, you may also take water in a clear (not coloured) transparent plastic bottle.

  • Where can I put my personal things?

All personal items will be stored in a box during the test. However, no responsibility will be taken for the loss of personal items on the test day and you are very strongly advised not to bring anything other than what you require to complete the test.

  • When do I get my candidate number and speaking time?

You will be notified of these details when you register at 8.15 am on the test day.

  • When will the results be available?

Your results will be available for collection between 8.30 am and 12.00 pm, on the 13th calendar day after the test. You may pick up the results in person and you must bring your original, valid passport as identification; or you can preview your results online through the IELTS Australia website. If you do not pick up your results after the centre closes at 12.00 pm they will be posted on the next working day to the current address we have for you.

  • How can I change my address?

You should either email us at ielts.enquiries@uws.edu.au or complete the Change of Address form which you will find on your desk on the test day.
