  • I'm in a franchise or looking at buying one soon, is Auto One just like every other franchise?

Auto One is owned and run for the franchisees. It started over 24 years ago by 10 independent store owners and for much of its time ran as a co-operative buying group. Today Auto One is a privately listed company where each store owner is an equal share holder. There is an elected board of directors, and a member advisory council who ensure that strategic business decision is in the best interest of fellow franchise members.

  • Is there a franchise fee to get started?

Most franchisees charge a fee for the license to operate a business within a described territory that often has to be renewed every 5 - 7 years. For example you may normally need to pay a fee of $50,000 to $100,000 for a territory of 25,000 households or more. At Auto One there is no actual territory fee. New franchise members do need to purchase $5000 in shares that are rolled over at the expiry of each franchise term and issue a $10,000 bank guarantee.

  • How much in royalty fees does a franchisee pay to the franchisor?

In a typical franchise system, franchisees may be required to pay 4 - 11% of their turnover in royalty and marketing fees. So if you had a business with a $2 million turnover you could be paying at $100,000, more or less. At Auto One the royalty fee is zero, however franchisees do pay a low flat fee which is currently $1,032 per month regardless of the turnover size of the business so your performance is uncapped.

  • What happens if I want to sell or leave the group?

Many Auto One franchisees have been with our group for 10 - 24 years. Some are family businesses heading into their 2nd or 3rd generation of ownership, & some are multi-site operators. They value the marketing & purchasing benefits of being part of a group. If a franchisee ever chose to leave, their shares are refunded & the business remains theirs. Other typical franchise systems have exclusion zones & anti-competition clauses if a business is sold, terminated, or not renewed.

  • What support do I get if I buy an Auto One store?

The level of support from Auto One has increased in recent years. As a prospective new franchisee you will receive assistance with business planning & training, site selection, design & fit out & your stock file. On going support includes: Training Via State Meetings, Conferences & Store Visits, National Marketing Including TVC Campaigns, Catalogue Support, Website, Gift Card, Loyalty Programs & Sponsorships, Access To Loyalty Rebates & Local Marketing Funds.

  • What will it cost to fit out a store and does Auto One hold the master lease?

Auto One will not hold a master lease or place a margin of profit on the Lease. There are quite a few variables with store fit out so the cost may vary from $100,000 to $150,000 depending on what site requires. Typically a small store in a regional area starts at 350 square meters. Metropolitan stores range between 500 and 1000 square meters in size. Auto One provides all the fit out assistance to build a high quality store that can be compared to any major automotive retailer in the country.

  • How much stock do I need in a store?

The stock file varies depending on the needs of the location although the typical store starts off with around $350,000 in stock which is yours to sell. Typically our larger stores carry up to $600,000 in stock. Supply of stock can be from the Auto One distribution centre or direct from the supplier by account or central bill with trading terms ranging from 30 to 60 days.

  • How do I get started?

After the initial interview, the next step is to obtain a disclosure document which outlines the full terms and conditions of the franchise agreement with Auto One. You should take this to your professional advisors including an accountant and solicitor during what is called the '14 days cooling off period'. From there the planning to start your own Auto One business commences. The typical starting, planning and preparation period once a site is selected is 3 - 4 months.
