  • Is the radiation safe?

The radiation exposure during an x-ray is very low and we take every precaution to ensure this dose is minimised. If you know you are or think you may be pregnant, you must tell your referring doctor and the Radiographer performing your examination. Please read our Patient information Brochure on radiation dose for more information. For more information about Radiation Dose please view our leaflet here. Radiation Dose Information for patients.

  • What is an X-Ray?

X-rays are used to image almost any part of the body. They are the most common and most widely available examinations we offer. Queensland X-Ray employs state-of-the art computerised and digital imaging equipment to ensure maximum image quality and minimum radiation dose.

  • What should I expect when I arrive for my appointment?

Patients may be asked to change into a gown for their x-ray. The Radiographer will explain what to do. Patients may be asked to hold their breath for the x-ray.

  • What is a BMD scan?

This procedure is an examination that uses a special machine to scan the lower spine and one of the hips, to assess for possible osteoporosis or reduced bone density. Patients lie on their back on a padded table for the duration of the procedure. A narrow "arm" passes over patients during the procedure.

  • What is Fluoroscopy?

Screening studies or fluoroscopy are a specialised type of medical imaging in which x-rays act a bit like a video and are used in real time and show movement. Fluoroscopy studies include examinations like barium swallows, meals, and enemas, and arthrograms to name a few.

  • How much does it cost?

The cost will vary depending on the reason for having the scan. Medicare has permitted us rebates for a limited number of clinical indications - the referring doctor and our reception staff will help explain this. To download more information about Medicare rebate able items for PET/CT click here.

  • What is an interventional procedure?

Interventional procedures involve using a medical imaging modality (CT, Ultrasound, Fluoroscopy etc.) to enable a radiologist to perform a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure on a patient. For example, a CT may be used to help locate a body part for tissue sampling / biopsy or drainage OR to position a needle for injection that is aimed at helping limit pain - for example facet or nerve root injections for back pain.

  • Is there any special preparation for Patients?

Patients will be notified of any special preparation at the time of booking, as some of the examinations will require fasting for four hours prior to the appointment. CT Abdomen/Pelvis patients will need to drink clear fluids for four hours prior to examination including 500mls in the hour before your appointment time. In some cases, patients will be asked to attend their appointment one hour early to drink a special fluid to outline your stomach and bowel.

  • How long does it take for X-ray examination?

An x-ray examination can take from 5 - 20 minutes to complete depending of the examination requested.
