Animal Care Centre Boarding Kennels and Cattery is a family owned and operated business in Mackay. We are located just 10 minutes north of Mackay, set on 12 acres of hilltop land with 360° panoramic views. Throughout its history, the property is known to have been a church and has been the site of a kennels since the early 70’s.

History

With a strong passion for animals, our family purchased the site in 1984, and transformed it’s facilities into a more modern kennel and cattery complex. Since then, the property continues to transform, with regular upgrades and new facilities developed.

After a fulfilling career in the pet care industry, David and Anne Hird retired in 2006, and proudly passed on the business to their son Tony, who continues on with their passion and enthusiasm for the Animal Care Centre.

Facilities

The kennels are cool and airy and the runs are long, sheltered and all are concrete based. All dogs are individually housed (unless they are from the same owners and with their permission) and have individual playtime daily in one of the three grassed exercise yards. There are four cattery rooms catering for the short and long term stays with us. As with the dogs all cats are individually housed, and also receive individual playtime daily.

FAQs

  • What vaccinations will my pet require?

Dogs require a minimum C5. Being in North QLD, a Leptospirosis shot is also recommended. Cats require an F3 vaccination. All vaccinations must be fully up-to-date before boarding. And you will need to bring the proof of vaccination certificates with you when you drop your pet off. We do take puppies and kittens, but only after they have had their 2nd vaccination at 10-12 weeks.

  • Will my pet be comfortable?

Yes all of our accommodation is sheltered and well ventilated & protected during inclement weather for your pet’s comfort. If you have a bed, blanket, towel, or anything with a familiar smell we will leave it with them.

  • Do I need to supply food as well?

You do not need to supply food, unless they’re on a special vets prescribed diet. We have a fairly large selection of food available. For dogs we generally have 4 or 5 different brands of biscuits, fresh chicken mince, necks, frames, tinned food, roo mince, and brisket bones. Cats have biscuits, chicken mince, roo mince, plus loaf and casserole type tinned food. The fresh mince and briskets are delivered by a local butcher weekly.

  • What should I bring for my pet?

The only thing you need to bring is your pet’s current vaccination certificate. Toys are welcome, we will take beds as well, as long as they aren’t filled with bean bags balls or feathers (you learn the hard way only once!). We supply all the food and water bowls. Please bring your dogs on leads, and your cats in cages.

  • Do you provide a pick up & delivery service?

We can offer a pick up & delivery service within Mackay. Although this is subject to kennel activities. Please feel free to contact us to discuss availability and pricing.

  • What happens if my pet gets sick during the stay?

We prefer to use your usual pet’s vet clinic, but if distance or hours of operation becomes an issue we have access to several vets should an emergency arise. In any situation we will do our best to contact you first. But if it is in the animals best interests we will take them to a vet straight away. Please be advised that all veterinary expenses are your responsibility.

  • Will my pet be safe at Animal Care Centre? Can I come and have a look beforehand?

Absolutely, If you wish to have a look for yourself please call to organise a time for an inspection. All of our kennels are concrete based and most have 8 feet high thick wire mesh, the rest are concrete based with fully enclosed thick wire mesh. Each cattery unit is inside 1 of the 4 rooms themselves.

  • Can you give my pet its required medication?

Yes. We are happy to accommodate pet’s requiring medication, the medication needs to be clearly labelled with clear instructions. There is no extra charge for administering medication.

  • Will my pet have its own space?

Absolutely, for dogs, the kennels themselves are fairly large (our biggest being 12m long runs!) and dogs being dogs, they will be entertained running up and down barking to the other dogs. We have 3 grassed exercise yards as well and they will all get time during the day to have a run around and look about. For the cats, the units are in rooms themselves, so they get let out every day to explore of the room. Obviously they are let out individually/separately as well.

  • Do you take bitches on heat?

Yes, depending on availability. We have 4 isolation kennels for bitches on heat, dogs recovering from surgery, older dogs etc. We just ask if your dog is on heat to please leave her in your vehicle until all the booking-in formalities are completed.
