Health & Wellbeing
Preserving optimal health and wellbeing is best achieved through the prevention of sickness, maintenance of present health, and the cure of treatable illnesses. Medical health professionals are numerous and varied in Australia, and range from alternative and natural therapists, to mental health practitioners, to medical specialists.
Primary health care encompasses traditional medicines, and involves the combined work of doctors, surgeons, dentists, optometrists and nurses, as well radiographers, diagnostic analysts and pharmacists. Secondary health care services generally provide acute care, short-term treatments such as emergency and intensive care, child birth assistance, and most procedures or follow-up care provided in a hospital. Tertiary care is specialised consultative health care which is usually provided to referred inpatients who are receiving services such as cancer management and palliative care, or who are scheduled for neurosurgery or cardiac surgery. Sometimes used as an extension of tertiary care, quaternary care is highly specialised and not widely available. It can include experimental medicine and uncommon or new surgeries. As this care is quite rare, people in need of such treatments often travel great distances to acquire it. Mental wellbeing is provided in several sectors and in many ways, from group sessions in community halls lead by social workers and counsellors, to private and public psychiatry, and clinical psychology. Generally, allied health professionals, such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, and dieticians, also work this area. Many cosmetic procedures now fall under the health care umbrella, especially when it is reconstructive surgery, administered to treat severe burns or other injuries.
Natural therapies are very popular in Australia, either as an alternative to traditional western medicine, or to aid and compliment it. From massage therapy and acupuncture which work on pressure points, to holistic treatments such as homeopathy and naturopathy which look at the functioning of the body as a whole, this sector of the health industry can boost wellbeing and offer relief for almost any symptom or ailment.
