A newsagent is an individual or shop that sells newspapers, magazines, and other news related literature. Newsagency is another term for a retail newsagents shop, this is distinct from distribution newsagencies which offer home delivery of newspapers and magazines.
Retail newsagents will offer a comprehensive range of newspapers and magazines, stationery, gift s and wrappings and greeting cards. Other items of particular or local interest can be sold, including tobacco and cigarettes, maps, sweets and gum, books and phone cards. Newsagents will often operate for longer than standard retail hours, but do not tend to extend to convenience store hours. Newsagents can be licenced to sell stamps and a limited range of other postal products, as well as train tickets and lotto tickets.
Specialist newsagents may cover a broader range of interests for magazines and periodicals, or may offer a comprehensive range of interstate and international newspapers. Sporting guides for horse racing and major football codes, as well as supporter materials may also be stocked. News agents in tourist areas and major cities can offer tourist guides, local maps and souvenirs. Newsagents may be part of a chain or buying group, or may be an individual or small business concern.
