Security is a level of protection, usually achieved through proactive measures, from danger. Whether it is home security, personal security, or online security, everyone has the right to safety from damage or loss.

Designed to protect properties and the people within them against damage or theft, home security systems include a range of technologies and equipment. At the basic end of home security are locks for entry points, bars on windows, and vaults or safes for the storage of valuables. Increased security may include motion detecting alarm systems which are activated by a pin code or password, and set off when sensors are triggered. Cameras at points of entry can also be very useful in providing security, with some cameras even being equipped with facial recognition technology.

Security guards can protect people, property and assets. They can also handle crowd control at busy public areas or major events, such as concerts or night clubs. In some cases, the presence of a security guard has been proven to deter criminal activity. In many instances, however, security guards work behind the scenes, viewing security monitors and routinely patrolling areas of significance. Generally reserved for well-known people such as royalty, celebrities and political figures, personal security is a niche industry full of highly-trained professionals. Everyday people may obtain the services of a bodyguard while travelling in regions which are known to have high crime rates or hostile populations.

With so much of our lives taking place online, it is little wonder that the criminal world has extended into cyberspace. Identity theft is the most prevalent form of online crime taking place on the internet today, with phishing, spam and hacking being the most favoured methods. Computer security aims to protect valuable and sensitive information on networks across the world. Tactics can range from virus protection programs on individual computers to undercover work, surveillance, and task forces set up by anti-cyber-crime units.
