You must declare all interest from all sources no matter how small the amount is.

Do I need to declare my overseas pension?

In most cases overseas pensions are taxable and if you are an Australian resident you will need to include the amount in your tax return. There are a few exceptions to this rule. Please call H&R Block if you are not sure.

I have received $25,000 for an interview on a current affair show. Is this taxable?

Yes this payment is taxable. You have been paid for providing a service.

I am leaving to travel overseas; do I need to complete my tax return before I leave?

It isn't necessary to complete a return before leaving Australia unless you will not be back before the due date for lodgement of your return (31 October). If you won't be back until after that date contact the Australian Taxation Office or a registered tax agent to apply for an extension of time to lodge.

My father has died. Do I need to complete a tax return for him?

It is necessary to complete a tax return to date of death if a return has been lodged in past years. This return, marked final, must show all income received to the date of death.

Can you complete my tax return if I am missing a PAYG Payment Summary (group certificate)?

Your return can be completed using the details from a copy of the PAYG Payment Summary (your employer can provide this), a letter from your employer detailing the information on the PAYG Payment Summary or by reviewing your pay slips for that period. If you are unable to obtain the payment summary details from an employer a Statutory Declaration would need to be completed.

Are my education expenses claimable against AUSTUDY?

The tax office has ruled that deductions for education expenses are not deductible against AUSTUDY income.

Can I claim the costs of seminars?

The costs associated with seminars are tax deductible provided that they relate to your current income producing activities.

I bought an iPad this year for my daughter to use for school. Can I add the cost to my Education Tax Refund claim?

The ATO will allow the cost of an iPad as an eligible education expense if it was bought for a primary or secondary school student to use for their study. It is treated as an equivalent to a laptop. Provided that you are eligible to make a claim, you can include the cost of the ipad in the calculation of the Education Tax Offset this year.
