  • Why would I need health cover?

Latrobe's quality range of Hospital and Extras covers allows you the freedom to: - Choose a hospital - Choose a doctor - Choose when to be treated - Choose a level of cover that suits you - Take control of your health - Gain peace of mind and security

  • What does private health insurance cover?

There are two types of cover, hospital and extras. Your hospital policy provides cover for accommodation costs that include your bed fee, theatre fee, prostheses and also a percentage payment towards your medical fees. Extras cover allows you to claim against the cost of treatments such as chiropractic, physiotherapy and dental.

  • What do I do before going to hospital?

We want to help make your stay in hospital as worry free as possible, by providing sound advice and helpful information before you're admitted. We strongly urge you to call us as soon as you become aware that hospital treatment may be needed. We will provide personalised advice and information about your benefits. We do everything possible to provide you with accurate information, but we are only able to provide you with an estimation.

  • What is not covered?

Private health insurance does not cover general practitioners or specialist consultations or any diagnostic services that are not provided as part of an inpatient episode. Private health insurance may not cover the total cost of the doctors - services provided to you in hospital, which in turn may leave you with an out-of-pocket expense referred to as the 'medical gap'.

  • Are there ways to reduce the cost of PHI?

There are options that you can consider when trying to reduce costs, our Member service staff can assist you in ways to do this for example: - Are you making your payments via direct debit? - Do you have an excess table? - Do you have extras cover? - Is your cover appropriate for your needs?

  • Will I have out of pocket costs ("gaps") for my treatment?

Depending on your treatment, you will probably have a number of different service providers as well as your main specialist, for example an assistant surgeon, an anaesthetist and perhaps an assistant anaesthetist, pathologists and radiologists. If your medical practitioners all charge the Medicare Schedule Fee, you will not have any medical gaps. Medicare rebates 75% of the schedule fee, and Latrobe rebates the rest.

  • What is the Australian Government Rebate on Private Health Insurance?

The Australian Government Rebate on Private Health Insurance helps reduce the cost of health insurance premiums. From 1 July 2012, the rebate you are entitled to will depend on your income and age. The introduction of the 'income test' will not affect a majority of people and therefore there will be no impact on premiums.

  • What is the Medicare Levy Surcharge?

The Medicare Levy Surcharge is an additional tax paid by Australians who are classified as high income earners and do not have an appropriate level of hospital cover. The Fairer Private Health Insurance Bills 2012 introduced by the Federal Government took effect from 1 July 2012. As a result, the Medicare Levy Surcharge will be tiered and will vary depending on one's taxable income.

  • What is Lifetime Health Cover?

Lifetime Health Cover is a federal government initiative designed to encourage people to take out private hospital cover at a younger age and maintain it throughout their lifetime. You have until 1 July after your 31st birthday to take out private hospital cover, otherwise you will pay a loading on top of the base cover rate when you join later on in life. The loading is 2% for each year you delay joining, to a maximum of 70%. After 10 continuous years of cover, the loading ceases.
