Here’s our handy checklist of the things your accountant or tax agent will need at tax time. File them away somewhere safe. Then, when it’s time to visit your accountant, you’ll be all ready to go.
General information
- Last year’s income tax return;
- Records of sales or purchases of shares, businesses and property;
- Private health insurance details;
- Information about your spouse;
- Information about your children, including any Centrelink benefits.
Information about your income
- Your PAYG summaries;
- Pensions, government payments or allowances;
- Statements from banks and building societies about interest earned;
- Dividend statements;
- Details about rental property income;
- Details about business income;
- Details about any other income earned.
Information about your expenses
- Work related expenses – such as your uniform, tools, education or fees;
- Motor vehicle expenses including your logbook and all expense items or an estimation of kilometres if you haven’t kept a log book;
- Travel expenses;
- Investment expenses such as bank fees, financial adviser fees and investment borrowings;
- Rental property expenses such as rates, body corp fees, agent fees, interest on loans, repairs and maintenance, travel, rates and a depreciation schedule;
- Cost of managing tax affairs;
- Donations to charity.
