Top 5 things you need in an accountant

Having a great relationship with your accountant gives you peace of mind – and helps your finances too.

But finding an accountant you can trust is not always a piece of cake. Here’s our guide to finding a great one.

Step 1: The interview

Think of it like speed dating. Set up a free consultation with at least three accountants. Talk openly and honestly about your business (if you’ve got one) and your financial goals. Let them know that you’re shopping around.

Here’s where you can find accountants near you

Take your old tax returns and financial statements. Don’t be afraid to share your confidential information with them. You want to feel like you can trust them, and, equally they have to feel like they can help you achieve your goals.

Step 2: Check their qualifications

Before you start a relationship with an accountant, do a little background check – you don’t want them to break your heart. Check out their qualifications and memberships. If they are a Certified Practicing Accountant or a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, you can feel reasonably confident of their integrity and professionalism.

If you aren’t sure about their qualifications, ask them.

Step 3: What are the costs?

Do they charge per hour or per service?  Is there a fixed monthly or annual fee? Find out what other accountants in the area charge, as comparison.

You might be able to save money by having a junior accountant manage your affairs – with a senior colleague checking their work.

Step 4: Are you compatible?

If you are a small business owner, make sure that the accountant has experience dealing with small business clients. A small accountancy firm might understand your needs better than a large firm that’s used to dealing with big players. If you’re unsure, ask to speak to some of their clients.

Step 5: Taking it to the next level

If you are a business owner, you’ll probably want more from your accountant than just a tax return. You’ll probably want a friendly ear on all matter of issues, from financial advice, asset management, employee issues, investment advice… So make sure they are happy for you to be more than just an EOFY client.

Ask them – are they happy to chat with you whenever you need to talk?

But not all relationships will succeed. That’s why it’s important that you:

Know when to say goodbye

As your relationship progresses, make sure that your needs are still being met.

Are they available to take your calls? Do they take longer than 24 hours to return your call? Do they get your tax returns in on time? If you feel like your needs are no longer being met, it’s okay to look for a new accountant. If you do move firms, make sure the new accountant arranges a transfer of your files.
