How to keep your pets safe during a renovation
Index
Renovating your home can be a stressful time for everyone involved, even the family pet. There are a few precautions you can take to make this process as pain free as possible for your dog, cat, fish or budgie.
Put them out of harm’s way
If your dog in particular is sensitive to noise and visitors, consider boarding them for the entire period or ask a friend or neighbour to look after them. If being separated from your puppy is not an option, make sure they are kept away from the construction zone either by fencing them in or tying them up. Cats may be happiest placed in a safe room during the renovation period. Leaving a television or radio on in the room can help mask construction noise. You should also protect the room from dust and fumes. Being small, fish and birds can be affected quite badly by even household fumes, so locate them well away from the renovation area.
Organised work site
Talk to the contractors about safe practices, for example ensure electrical leads are kept off the floor and out of the way of sharp teeth. Loose items should also be stacked carefully – planks leaning against a wall can easily be knocked over by a passing animal. Toxic liquids such as mineral turpentine and paint need to be kept covered and up high when possible.
Keep a close eye on your pet during the renovation period. Any changes in behaviour or appetite could be signs of stress – consult your vet if you have any concerns.
