The naughty truth: childcare, discipline and you
Index
It’s great to find a child care centre that you and your child are happy with. But no matter how wonderful the care, there will be times when you won’t agree with the way that the carers look after your child.
Discipline is a prickly area. How does their idea of discipline differ from yours? Chances are the staff at the centre will have a professional and detached response to a misbehaving child, which might be quite different to your own emotional response.
While that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it’s important to recognise that they have to look after many children, not just yours, and routines have to run smoothly at the centre.
When you first approach a child care centre, it pays to discuss a range of topics with them, such as behaviour, eating and sleeping habits and how they approach discipline. It’s perfectly understandable if your ideas about raising a child are so different that you prefer to look elsewhere for childcare.
But sometimes problems will arise after your child is already enrolled at the centre. In that case, make sure you talk to the staff, outline your concerns and be sure to listen to their reasons and responses. You might find that their actions are justified under the circumstances.
