How long should a hot water service last?
Index
While the old saying is true – you get what you pay for – the life of your hot water system depends on the quality of the water as much as the quality of the system.
Whatever the type of hot water system you have – solar hot water, gas or electric – the most common reason for a hot water system to fail is corrosion.
Consequently, systems that have are instantaneous or have continuous flow have a longer life span than other models because they don’t require the storage of water.
What’s more, if you live in an area that has poor water quality or "hard" water, then your hot water systems will probably need to be replaced more often.
Just a rough idea….
- A system with a tank lined with glass or enamel may last for five to ten years.
- A stainless steel tank will last around for seven to ten years
- A copper tank will last around seven years.
- Hot water systems that use heat pumps have around a ten year life span.
If you are purchasing a new system, check the warranty – they will indicate the expected life of the product.
Finally – don’t forget to keep your warranty in a safe place!
