A wardrobe build with maximum storage in mind

When storage becomes a problem a new wardrobe build can be the perfect solution, but how do you know what is best for your home? "There are too many options!" jokes wardrobe maker Phil. "Every person has different needs depending on the size of their house."

Phil has some innovative ideas for homes that seem too small for a walk-in wardrobe. "If two bedrooms butt up next to each other, I have removed that wall in the past and created two wardrobes back to back. It’s a great way to make use of minimal space," Phil says.

In other small bedrooms, Phil alters the door to fit. "Instead of a hinged door, I do a bi-fold or slide door; that way it won’t hit against the bed as you open the door."

However, some rooms are just too small for a walk-in, or you may be thinking about moving and want to take your custom design with you. "There are also wardrobes that look like furniture," Phil says.

"Free-standing robes are better in some houses, and you can take them with you. The trouble with ones off the showroom floor is the lack of depth, but with a custom-built wardrobe you can plan everything for your needs." To make up for a lack of depth, the wardrobe can have hanging rails that slide out instead of regular fixed rails.

In designing your wardrobe you need to take into account what clothes and things you have to store. "The majority of clothing nowadays is short – skirts, shirts and trousers only need short hanging space. So we have two hanging rails – one above the other – to use space well," Phil says.

Once the hanging part is organised, it’s a matter of finding the right drawers and shelves for your needs. "There are belt, scarf and tie racks, jewellery drawers, different handles; the options are endless."

The newest fashion for wardrobes is in the colours you choose. "A lot of people want different colours inside for the shelves and drawers now," Phil says. "Instead of just white laminate, there’s now a range of colours that can work in with any scheme."

Find out how getting the right wardrobe will ensure you don’t struggle to find storage options in your bedroom by talking with a wardrobe maker in your area today.
