Before buying a second hand car it pays to know what condition it’s in. Are the log books up to date? What’s the state of the interior? Is there any rust? You’ll be happy to pay a good price if you know the car is in tip-top condition.

So it makes sense to keep your car in top condition. Not only will you save on repairs, but it guarantees a good resale price when the time comes to say goodbye.

Here’s out top tips how to keep your car in great shape.

Check and change the oil

Do you want your engine to last for hundreds of thousands of miles, or give up after just a few years? That’s the difference a regular oil change makes. In new models an indicator on the dash lights up when it is time to change the oil.

For older models it’s important to check and change the oil at least every 3000 kilometres – but more often if you car has low milage, and you tend to drive in stop-start traffic or dusty roads.

You also need to check the transmission and differential oils. Check your owner’s manual if you’re not sure.

Change the filters

After changing the oil, replace the oil filter. Check your manual to find out how to do it.  And don’t forget to check the air filter. A clogged air filter will stop your engine performing to capacity, and might harm it in the long term.

Cool it down

You also want to keep an eye on your engine’s cooling system. If it fails, your engine will heat up, which can cost thousands of dollars to repair. So flush the system’s hoses and change the coolant every year. Use a 50/50 mix of coolant and distilled water – this will keep the cooling system in good shape, and prevent corrosion and deposits from building up.

Tyres

Keep your tyres at the right inflation pressure. It’s good for the tyres, the car and fuel economy as well. It’s also a safety issue. This only takes a few moments, and doesn’t cost a thing.

Gauge it

Keep a check on your car’s gauges to identify problems with your oil pressure, cooling system and tyre pressure.

Get a check-up

Find a mechanic you like and trust and stick with them. Read our article on how to choose a great mechanic here.  A regular mechanic can identify potential issues long term, saving you time and money.

Make sure your mechanic keeps detailed notes about each service in the log book, so that a new mechanic, with only the log book as a reference, can be aware of any ongoing issues.

When it comes to resale potential, if a buyer looks over your log book and finds dedicated service by a single mechanic they’ll feel confident that your car has been well-looked after. This will be a big plus when it come to selling.

Look smart

If you take a moment to look over your car, chances are you’ll notice any scratches or nicks that need attention. Check that the tyres are wearing evenly, take a peek at the hoses under the hood and make sure all the lights work.

Keep it clean

To keep it looking good, your car needs a regular wash and a wax every six months. Clean off bird droppings and tree sap ASAP. Store the car out of the sun and away from damaging UV rays and use a cover over the windscreen in summer. Keep the carpets well vacuumed, and use an upholstery conditioner with UV protection.

Drive safely

It goes without saying that the best way to protect the long term value of your car is to avoid prangs, dints and accidents. It is very difficult to get the car back into perfect shape after a bingle and it will affect the resale value as well. So, listen to your mum, and drive safely.
