Motorbikes, safety gear and the law
Index
Like all licensed vehicles, motorcycles are subject to strict laws when it comes to safety. But because motorcycles have a higher rate of accidents than other vehicles, the laws ensure riders are taking appropriate safety precautions both on and off the road.
These laws are in place to protect you, your motorbike and other road users.
There a number of motorcycle parts and accessories that improve the safety of a motorbike or scooter. Some of these are required to make the bike roadworthy and pass the registration process. So before you buy a bike, make sure it’s fitted with the following:
- Number plates must be clearly visible and fitted with a light for night riding,
- Tyres must have at least 1.5 mm tread,
- Rear vision mirrors must be fitted to each side of the motorcycle,
- Flashing turn indicators must be fitted front and rear,
- Headlights and brake lights must be in working order.
When you buy motorbike, check that all safety accessories are in place to avoid additional costs after the sale.
