What is marriage counselling?
Index
Marriage counselling, or relationship counselling, is the process of bringing couples together to talk in an effort to recognise and manage differences and problems. These relationships could be any type of committed couple – married, same-sex, living together or in a committed relationship – who feel they need professional help to get their relationship back on track.
Usually a couple sees the counsellor together, although sometimes one member of the couple might want to talk individually. This can also be beneficial to the relationship.
Counsellors are often engaged when the relationship reaches a crisis point, but counselling can actually be beneficial even in seemingly happy relationships – afterall, intervention can prevent crises occuring. Besides, there are always areas of our lives that can be improved with help.
Some couples choose to take part in long-term psychotherapy sessions, where the relationship becomes the ‘patient’ under analyses.
