Above ground swimming pools for luxury on a budget

Fancy taking a dip in your own backyard? From flexibility to cost cutting, the above ground pool is a great way to bring the swimming lifestyle into your backyard, and they’re more affordable than you’d think…
When it comes to installing a new swimming pool, above ground pools are no longer considered a poor man’s option, with developments in style and features swaying opinion over the years. But with above ground pools being thousands of dollars cheaper than in-ground set-ups, price is still one of the major attractions.
The benefits of installing an above ground swimming pool:
1. Cost-effective
The main cost saving of an above-ground swimming pool is the interior material. Vinyl lining, which can be used in all pool types, is far cheaper than fibreglass or moulded concrete. Pool builder Mike Latchford sells a large range of above-ground models and is aware of what makes them popular. "There’s been a resurgence in the vinyl-lined pool market as people seek to maintain their lifestyles with less cost," he says.
2. DIY friendly
Another benefit of above ground swimming pools is that they don’t require professional installation, and DIYers should easily be able to master the job. "The pools we sell come with a step-by-step booklet explaining each stage of the installation process," Mike reveals. "You don’t need a strong mechanical background, as the instructions use everyday terms. A flat-bottom pool is relatively easy to install, while a deep-end model will require a little more expertise as levels become more critical."
3. Portable
As above-ground units commonly sit on top of the ground, pool owners can also save on the cost and effort of excavating a hole. This makes them a sensible choice for those in a less permanent living situation, as even renters can pack up the pool and take it with them to a new home if need be.
4. Aesthetically pleasing
However, if aesthetics are a concern, there are plenty of ways to jazz up the look of an above ground swimming pool. Consider installing the pool either partially or fully in the ground. This is a fabulous way to blend a streamlined pool with attractive surrounds without stepping up to the more costly levels of in-ground pool design.
5. Durable
And just because they’re cheaper doesn’t mean above ground pools are any less durable. Demands for advancements in technology have led to some useful features, as Mike reveals. "Around 70% of all pools that I sell are now salt water," he says. "In particular, the Zodiac range of salt-water pools is made of materials that will not rust."
