Can I provide my own fabric?
Index
A professional upholsterer is able to offer an almost limitless range of fabric or leather upholstery to complete your job, however there may be a reason that you want to provide your own fabric.
Most upholsterers will work with fabric that you supply yourself but they will charge a cutting fee in addition to their labour cost. Additionally, the upholsterer will make no guarantees for the quality of the fabric that you supply nor for how long it will last. The upholsterer will provide you with the best possible result with the fabric you supply but you should ask them if you have chosen the right fabric for the type of job you need done.
You may have a decorative theme going on that requires the use of a specific fabric over a number of applications. For example, you may want to reupholster an old couch to match your new curtains but the curtain fabric may be a light cotton and not suitable to stand up to the wear and tear required of an upholstery fabric. Ask your upholsterer for advice when it comes to what fabrics suit certain applications. You may be able to achieve the look you want by making throw cushions to match your new curtains rather than compromising the the quality of the job by upholstering the entire couch in an unsuitable fabric.
