What is astigmatism?
Astigmatism is a form of refractive error (others include short sightedness or long sightedness). In astigmatism the front of the eye (the cornea) or the crystalline lens inside the eye does not have spherical surfaces, instead being a different curvature in one direction to another.
What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease that affects the small blood vessel systems throughout the body. Diabetes can cause bleeding and accumulation of fluid in the retina of the eyes. This condition is known as diabetic retinopathy.
What are disposable contact lenses?
Disposable contact lenses are just that - they're designed to be worn for a day and thrown away and is a simple and convenient option for contact lens wearers. The frequency of replacement also provides a healthier option for your eyes.
What are extended wear contact lenses?
Extended Wear lenses have been specifically designed to be worn continuously for up to 30 days and nights. Yes, contact lenses you can sleep in which provide the ultimate in convenience and comfort.
What is long-sightedness (hyperopia)?
In hyperopia, the eye has too little focussing power for the length of the eye. This means that for the eye to see clearly at any distance, the eye has to focus much harder than the normal eye has to. Most young hyperopes can see clearly in the distance and at normal reading distances, but with effort. Most hyperopes over the age of 50 can't see anything clearly, with near worse than distance, as the eyes lose the ability to focus over time (presbyopia).
What is short-sightedness (myopia)?
Myopia or shortsightedness is a form of refractive error. It occurs when the power of the eye is too strong, or the eyeball grows too long. In shortsightedness distance vision is blurred and near vision is usually clear (although may be blurred if the myopia is very high or astigmatism or presbyopia is also present). Often myopia begins in childhood or the teenage years and usually increases up until the early 20s, although it may stop earlier or later.
What is presbyopia?
Presbyopia is a condition of the eyes whereby the eye lose their ability to focus on close objects. It is a normal change in function, not a disease. Everybody gets it, whether they are myopic, hyperopic, astigmatic or perfectly sighted for distance vision.
How can I make my specs thinner?
There is a wide range of lens materials they can be made out of; 'high index' materials bend light more so the curves don't have to be as steep, so they are thinner.
What are non-disposable contact lenses?
These provide the widest range of prescription options and cater for most requirements. Non disposable lenses are designed to be worn every day and stored in solution overnight. They have a shelf life of up to 2 years and require greater maintenance to ensure eye health and lens longevity.
Can I wear contact lenses?
Yes, it is very likely that you are able to wear contact lenses! Australia has the lowest rate of contact lens wear in the Western World. Less than 10% of spectacle wearers wear contact lenses. About 90% of spectacle wearers could wear contact lenses at least part of the time.
