With over 60 years of experience in steel fabrication in Melbourne Australia, Steer Manufacturing has seen huge growth in the use of steel frames in construction. Steel is the best product available for making residential and domestic wall frames, floor and roof systems. Steer Manufacturing have for many years been heavily involved in residential and commercial construction around Australia and now with state of the art equipment will be much better placed to produce quality steel frames on a reduced lead time, and with greater flexibility.
Unaffected by termites, borers and dry rot Fire resistance Easy to erect, cutting down on construction time Extremely strong yet lightweight Will not warp, shrink or twist and is not weakened by knots or cracks as timber is Buildings constructed with steel are long-lasting Can be precision manufactured to exact proportions Greater design freedom and reduced risk of problems during building 100% recyclable material Not chemically treated, making it safe to handle and free from allergens
Steer Manufacturing frames are fabricated to the following standards: AS1170.1 – 1989: SAA Loading Code – Part 1 Dead and Live Loads AS1170.2 – 1989: SAA Loading Code – Part 2 Wind Loads AS4055-1992: Wind Loads for Housing AS3623-1993: Nash standard for housing AS4600-1996: Cold Form Structures Code Steel frame homes are also great for the owner-builder as they cut out the 20% builder’s commission that you would normally have to pay and can be erected by anyone with average mechanical ability.
Steel roof truss systems can be provided to suit all types of roof construction. The strength and uniformity of the steel members enable standard design trusses to be used for spans up to 15 metres. Steel or timber battens can be fixed to the trusses for either metal roofing or roof tiles. Lightweight steel roof battens provide substantial benefit over their timber equivalents. They are straight, and remain so, long after they are installed.

Is steel electrically safe?
Properly installed steel frames are earthed and can actually be safer than timber alternatives. A broken or pierced wire will be grounded by a steel frame but can remain live and continue to leak current in a timber frame. This creates an electrocution and fire hazard within the walls.
What are the advantages of steel house frames?
Steel house frames provide several advantages for builders such as greater design flexibility due to their much high strength to weight ratio. They also do not rot, shrink or warp and are much easier to assemble once on site, reducing the risks on the job site.
Is steel durable?
Steel is engineered to resist corrosion through a phenomenon known as ‘sacrificial protection.’ A protective coating of zinc/aluminium alloy is applied to the steel which ‘sacrifices’ itself when exposed to corrosive elements, leaving the steel safe and structurally sound.
Can steel be used in coastal and cyclone prone areas?
Steel is the first choice for sites with exposure to high winds due to the strength of the material. The durability of steel also makes it well-suited to moisture-prone coastal areas, where timber can easily degrade and rot.
Can steel give the design freedom?
Yes, steel can give a greater design freedom and reduced risk of problems during building.
