How long does an eye examination take?

A comprehensive eye examination can take up to 40 minutes. The length of an eye examination can vary depending on what testing is required at the time.

Do I need an eye exam?

Everyone needs an eye exam, regularly. It's recommended that you have one at least once every two years, and every year if you're a senior. More than half of all Australians and nearly three-fourths of all adults need some form of vision correction. Even if you don't notice any change in your vision, you need a regular eye exam to ensure the health of your eyes.

Do I need to make an appointment for an eye examination?

Most of our eye examinations are Bulk Billed by Medicare, if you do not have a Medicare card, you will need to pay $71.00 for a thorough comprehensive eye exam which not only includes a current prescription for spectacles but also a detailed health check for Glaucoma, Macular Degeneration, cataracts and many other important conditions of the eye which need to be checked regularly.

How can I tell if I have glaucoma?

Often you will not be aware that you have glaucoma until it is too late. Usually there are no symptoms until permanent damage has occurred. In some cases the increased pressure in the eye will cause blurred vision, apparent coloured rings around lights, loss of side vision, and pain and redness of the eye.

Who is likely to be affected by glaucoma?

People over the age of 40 years are far more likely to have glaucoma than younger people. Also, glaucoma tends to run in families. People with a blood relative who has suffered from glaucoma and people over 40 years of age are at risk and should have their eyes checked regularly by an optometrist

What causes glaucoma?

The exact causes of glaucoma are not known. In some cases the drainage network of the eye may not be formed properly, or may become blocked by natural materials or due to injury; in other cases there is no clear cause.

What is the best way to clean spectacle lenses?

Using a recommended optical spray and a micro-fibre cloth is the safest way to clean your optical lenses, never use methylated spirits or acetone as this will damage the lenses causing some materials such as polycarbonate lenses to crack and damage the lens completely. Never use hot water on lenses especially lenses which have a Anti-reflective coating as this will cause the coating to craze and at times become bad enough to affect your vision through the lens.
