Why is it important to have regular teeth cleaning by a dentist?

Did you know "teeth cleaning" does more than just clean your teeth? Removing plaque is absolutely essential if you want to maintain the health of your teeth and gums. Plaque builds up on the tooth surfaces and between the teeth and over time will harden into calculus or tartar which becomes impossible to remove at home. Brushing and flossing are, of course, vital, but everyone needs their teeth professionally cleaned on a regular basis.

I think I grind my teeth at night. What can I do about this? Can a local dentist help with this?

Do you wake up with discomfort in your jaws or a persistent headache? If so, you may be grinding (called bruxing) while you sleep. Persistent bruxing can damage teeth and cause them to get shorter and shorter. It can also damage your temporomandibular (jaw) joints and even affect your hearing. When was your dentist business established?

Our dentist business was established in 1957 by Dr Walsh with a goal to provide high-quality dental care in a relaxed and friendly environment. In 1989 the practice moved 20 meters next to Commonwealth Bank on Gympie Road and we have been here ever since. The practice has grown considerably since, with over 3 generations of families continuing to visit us on a regular basis. We thoroughly enjoy growing old with our patients while looking after their dental health.

My dentist said I have to see a specialist. Can you help?

Specialists are fantastic for complex cases, and we regularly work with specialists to obtain the best outcome for our patients. Indeed, we even have a few specialists on-site. We offer a full range of services such as wisdom teeth extractions and dental implants, and we would love to be of help if possible. A consultation first would be recommended.

Why are soft drinks bad for your teeth? What do your Chermside Dental Care Dentists think about soft drink?

Sugar and acids are your teeth's worst enemies. What are we talking about? Soft drinks, energy drinks, fruit juices, and candy. Acids acidify your saliva for an hour, and this result in softened tooth enamel, making it highly susceptible to decay. Parents, watch your kid's consumption of these because young children's enamel hasn't developed fully. This makes these drinks even more damaging for kids. As well as eliminating the above (or at least reducing their consumption), use a sugar-free.

My 12-year-old likes to chew ice. Is this harmful? Can a dentist help with this?

Tooth enamel is very hard, but that doesn't mean you can't break it. Try to avoid eating "hard food". Don't crack nutshells with your teeth or chew on ice. Do the dentists check for oral cancer?

Yes, we always do. Dentists and hygienists are your first line of defence in detecting and treating oral cancer. Each year there are thousands of people diagnosed with oral cancer. Worldwide, the problem is far greater, with new cases annually approaching 300,000. However, the good news is, when found early, oral cancers have an 80 to 90% cure rate. Our dentists have been providing this service to all Chermside, Aspley and Kedron residents for many years together with patients all over Brisbane.

My child is very anxious, can you help?

Yes, we can. We have experienced dentists and assistants who are great with kids. We also have TVs (with Netflix) on the roof, and happy gas available. It’s amazing what can be done when the child is comfortable and distracted.
