Xerostomia / Dry Mouth
Chronic dry mouth (xerostomia) can affect persons of any age, but it is much more prevalent in the elderly. It causes a wide range of problems including difficulty in swallowing), loss of the ability to taste , difficulty in speaking, an increased rate of tooth decay, an inability to wear or retain dentures, and an increase in oral infections, especially yeast.
Things You Need to Understand About Full Dentures.
Dentures do not last forever; the bones which support the dentures are slowly suffering resorption. On the other hand, you can have your denture relined every two to three years and so the dentures are well adapted to the underlying bone ridge and have dentures replaced every 5-7 years.
What About Denture Cleaning?
Deposits form on dentures such as micobial plaque, calculus and food debris. These deposits may be responsible for a variety of problems including denture stomatitis, angular stomatitis, unpleasant tastes, odours, unsightly appearance and accelerated deterioration of some denture materials, notably soft lining materials. The effective cleaning of dentures is therefore of considerable importance to the patients general wellbeing and oral health.
Should I Wear My Dentures to Bed at Night?
It's up to you, my advice is No. Tissue should be allowed to rest by removing dentures at night (giving blood circulation an opportunity to rebuild the tissues of the bearing surface).
What Are The Consequences of Tooth Loss?
Lost teeth will influence all the teeth in the mouth depending on position and surrounds. The amount of influence can range from tilting to slightly drifting of adjacent teeth and over eruption of the opposing teeth. This can lead to loss of surrounding bone, bruxing (clenching or grinding of teeth) and loss of vertical dimension. These changes to your bite and tooth position can make it difficult to correct if left too long.
What Are The Major Types of Partial Dentures?
Partial Dentures, Standard Acrylic, Chrome or Gold Cast Metal Frame Works with Acrylic & Teeth Attached and Flexible Dentures. Come in and find out more.
Porcelain Versus Plastic Teeth?
Porcelain teeth do not wear but because of this they do wear the underlying bone on substructure and any opposing dentition. Porcelain teeth are retained in the denture base by mechanical means. (Diatoric holes on pins fused to the porcelain). The joint between the tooth acrylic tends to fill with stains, fluids and odours over time. Read more on this at our website
